Are you in need of some bathroom remodel inspiration? Look no further. In this article, I'll take you on a journey of how we transformed a tired, outdated 1950s bathroom into a stylish and modern space that's perfect for 2018.
A Blast from the Past
Let's start by stepping back in time and visiting the bathroom of my childhood home. Not much had changed over the years - a little paint and some new bath towels were the extent of the updates. But now, prepare to be amazed by the transformation.
Before and After: Can you even believe it?
Memories of the Past
Closing my eyes, memories flood back. The scent of Aqua Net hairspray, the sounds of Flock of Seagulls blaring from the boom box - it was the bathroom of my youth. This particular bathroom was a jack and jill setup, with my bedroom on one side and my sisters' on the other. Ah, those were the days. I wish I had pictures to reminisce about my own bedroom.
And let me tell you, that bedroom was something special. Laura Ashley wallpaper, bedding, and even a lamp. It was a floral wonderland. But the bathroom, well, that was a different story.
Stuck in the Past
The bathroom appeared frozen in time, clinging to its 1950s roots. Aqua tile covered the floor, accompanied by white square tiles on the walls. The built-in toilet paper holder and flaking mirrors added to the charm of the bygone era. And let's not forget those butterfly tiles, forever destined to fly together with their vibrant blue wings.
Embracing Change
One day, I couldn't take it anymore. The butterflies had to be set free. We decided to gut the entire bathroom, starting from scratch. The old closet gave way to a larger vanity for the twins, the toilet was replaced, and the tub was refurbished. We tiled the room from floor to ceiling, saying goodbye to the remnants of the past.

Finding Inspiration
Creating an inspiration board was the first step in this amazing transformation. I wanted to maintain a classic feel, so I partnered with Jeffrey Court for their incredible glossy pearls tile. The walls were covered with a classic 2" x 4" subway tile, making installation a breeze.
My inspiration board for the bathroom remodel.
You can find both the glossy pearls tile and the subway tile, along with a vast array of other Jeffrey Court options, at your local Home Depot. The versatility of these tiles allows for easy updates in the future as the twins grow older.
The Finishing Touches
Gold accents bring a touch of luxury.
To add a touch of luxury to the remodeled bathroom, I chose gold accents instead of the typical brushed nickel. A stunning gold chandelier hangs from the ceiling, creating a dazzling effect throughout the space.
The faucets, handles, and pulls are all brass, while the toothbrush holder and other accessories feature marble and brass. We even gave the mirrors a little extra sparkle with a touch of Rub 'N Buff. And let's not forget the tiny chandeliers above each vanity - pure elegance.
Adding Color
A colorful shower curtain adds a vibrant touch.
After establishing the classic and luxurious elements, it was time to introduce some color. A vibrant shower curtain featuring pineapple patterns, along with patterned and polka-dotted hand towels, added a playful touch. Painted floral artwork adorns the walls, and a pink and white bathmat adds a cozy feel to the floor.
Embracing Nostalgia
A single tile remains as a reminder of the past.
But amidst all the changes, I couldn't bear to forget my roots. So, I saved one tile as a sentimental reminder. Perhaps I'll frame it and let it find its place in the new bathroom. It's a tribute to sky-high bangs, Flock of Seagulls, stirrup pants, and the ever-inspiring smell of Aqua Net.
