Every culture has its own system of beliefs and practices. In India, Vastu Shastra has been followed for centuries to design homes that bring in good energy, health, and wealth. While some may view Vastu principles as mere superstition, many criteria in Vastu Shastra can be justified scientifically, making it an important consideration for homeowners.

What is a North-Facing House?

A north-facing house is one where the main entrance faces the north direction. Contrary to popular belief, there are no inherently "inauspicious" directions in Vastu Shastra. Any house can be made Vastu compliant, including north-facing homes. However, there are certain guidelines to follow when planning the Vastu layout of a north-facing house to attract wealth and positive energies.

It Starts With the Placement of Your Entrance Door

According to Vastu Shastra, a north-facing home should ideally have its entrance door located in the fifth pada. This placement is considered the most beneficial for attracting wealth. However, if there are constraints preventing the door from being placed in the fifth pada, alternative placements can be considered. The space between the first and fourth padas can be utilized, while the sixth pada should be avoided if possible. Additionally, if the first pada is used for the door, it should not touch the northeast corner.

The sixth pada is the best placement option for the entrance door of your north-facing house.

Placement of Different Rooms in a North-Facing Home

Kitchen Placement

In a north-facing home, the kitchen can be placed in either the northwest or southeast area. The southeast direction (Agneya) is most recommended as it symbolizes fire. However, the kitchen should not be placed in the northeast corner.

Northwest or southeast directions are auspicious for kitchens in north-facing homes.

Bathroom Placement

Even though bathrooms are often neglected, their placement is crucial in Vastu Shastra. In a north-facing home, the ideal location for the bathroom is the southwest side. In case of multiple bathrooms, the southeast direction can also be considered. However, it is important to avoid placing bathrooms or toilets in the northeast corner.

The southwest direction is optimum for placing the bathroom in a north-facing home.

Bedroom Placement

For a north-facing home, the southwest area is considered ideal for the master bedroom. West-central rooms are recommended for children's bedrooms, while the northwest direction is suitable for guest bedrooms.

Your master bedroom should ideally be placed in the southwest side of your home.

Pooja Room Placement

The northeast direction (Ishanya) is considered perfect for the pooja room in a north-facing home. This direction holds significant religious importance, which is why it is advised to avoid placing bathrooms or any areas prone to waste generation in this corner.

Pooja rooms in a north-facing home should be placed in the northeast portion.

Other Dos and Don'ts as Per North-Facing House Vastu

  • Staircases should be placed in a clockwise direction, avoiding the north. South, west, southeast, and southwest areas are suitable for staircase placement.
  • To enhance the career and well-being of women in the household, ensure Vastu compliance in the southeast, as it is associated with Venus. The north zone should be open, well-lit, and spacious. Placing water tanks in the northwest can also contribute to women's development.
  • Avoid having trees or plants in the north direction and water tanks in the northeast.
  • Placing an idol of Kubera towards the north or a tulsi plant in the northern or eastern directions can establish positivity in the home.
  • Avoid placing mirrors in the south or southeast directions.
  • Opt for lighter colors such as shades of white, beige, warmer greys/greens, or blue for a north-facing home.

North-Facing House Vastu Cheat Sheet

Here are the key points to remember:

  • Avoid the main entrance in the northwest direction or just in the first pada.
  • Do not place toilets, bedrooms, or kitchens in the northeast corner.
  • Wastewater outlets should not be in the south or north directions.
  • Do not place doors, other than the entrance door, in the sixth pada.
  • Avoid coloring your house with dark warm colors like red.
  • The underground tank should not be on the northwest side.
  • Water tanks should not be in the north, northeast, or east direction.

While these guidelines can help bring positive energy and balance to your home, it is always recommended to consult a Vastu expert for personalized advice. Remember, your home should be a haven of tranquility and harmony, and Vastu Shastra offers a pathway towards achieving that.
