Styling and decorating can be a challenge for many people, myself included. It took years of trial and error for me to develop a style that truly represents me and allows me to make confident design decisions. I remember feeling frustrated when I first started decorating my home, as the advice I found was often vague and unhelpful. That's why I started a series of posts to share easy-to-follow decorating formulas that actually work.
In my previous post, I shared simple formulas for decorating a bookshelf. Today, I'm back with five simple formulas for arranging pillows on a queen bed. Whether you're a seasoned decorator or just starting out, these formulas will help you achieve a beautifully styled bed that reflects your personal taste.
1. The Classic Look
The classic look is my most tried-and-true formula for arranging pillows on a queen bed. It involves gradually decreasing the size of the decorative pillows from back to front. Start with two sleeping pillows standing upright against the headboard, then add two 26" pillows, followed by two 20-22" pillows, and finally, one smaller pillow centered in front.
2. The Fully Pillowfied Look
For a fully pillowfied look, start with two sleeping pillows against the headboard, followed by two Euro shams, two standard shams, and two lumbar pillows. This formula works best for beds with taller headboards, as it allows for at least a few inches of the headboard to be visible above the Euro shams. You can also add a small square or lumbar pillow in front for an extra touch.
3. The Minimalist Look
If you prefer a more minimalistic look, this formula is for you. Start with two bed pillows standing upright, then add two standard shams, and finally, a trio of decorative pillows. The size of the decorative pillows can be adjusted to fit the size of your headboard. For a taller headboard, opt for a pair of 26" pillows with a smaller pillow in front. For a smaller scale look, go with a pair of 20" decorative pillows and a centered third pillow.
4. The Eclectic Look
For a more eclectic look, start with two sleeping pillows and two 26" pillows as a base. Then, layer three pillows with different patterns and sizes in front. To achieve this look, arrange the three front pillows in an overlapping fashion. Start with the largest pillow in the back, followed by the next size in front with a small overlap, and finally, the smallest pillow overlapping both pillows behind it.
5. The Practical Look
Lastly, we have the practical look. This formula is perfect for those who prefer a clutter-free bed. Start with four sleeping pillows stacked against the headboard, followed by two 22"-20" pillows, and finally, one 18"-20" pillow. This arrangement is especially practical for guest rooms, as it provides extra sleeping pillows for those who prefer to have two.
These five formulas are just a starting point. Feel free to mix and match or add your own personal touch to create the perfect pillow arrangement for your queen bed. Happy pillowfying!
