Are you looking to add a touch of rustic warmth to your home? A brick veneer wall is the perfect solution! You may think that installing a brick wall is a daunting task, but I'm here to show you that it's actually much easier than you think. With these simple step-by-step instructions, you'll be able to create a stunning brick wall that will impress your guests and make your home feel cozy and inviting.

Finding the Best Method for Installing a Brick Wall

Before we dive into the installation process, let's talk about the different options available for installing a brick wall inside your home. Instead of using regular full-size bricks, you can opt for thin brick or brick veneer. Not only are they lighter, but they also give your wall a unique concrete tile-like appearance.

When I first started researching how to install a brick wall, I discovered various methods. After weighing the pros and cons, I decided to go with the construction adhesive method. It seemed less time-consuming and easier to grasp. Throughout the project, I learned some valuable insights that I'm excited to share with you.

DIY Faux Brick Wall: What You'll Need

To get started, gather the following materials:

  • Thin brick
  • Chalk line
  • Loctite power grab adhesive
  • Mortar mix
  • Grout bag
  • Tucking tool
  • Brick chisel
  • Large bucket

Prepare Your Wall for Brick Installation

If you're working on a new wall, I recommend installing cement board or water-resistant drywall (green or blue board) on the desired area. Securely screw it to the studs. Cement board is an excellent choice for supporting the weight of the bricks. However, if you're applying thin brick to an existing wall, regular drywall is sufficient. Just make sure the wall is clean before proceeding.

Draw Leveling Lines with Chalk

Before adhering the bricks, it's essential to establish level lines. Use a chalk line to create both horizontal and vertical lines on the wall. While it doesn't have to be perfect, having a guide will help you maintain consistency. Remember, you want your brick wall to resemble an old, imperfect structure. Feel free to use your finger or eyeball as a spacer between the bricks for an authentic look.

Adhere the Bricks to the Wall

Now it's time to apply the bricks to the wall. Start by selecting a pattern. I personally chose the running bond pattern, where you start with a full brick on the bottom row, followed by a half brick on the next row, and repeat the pattern upwards. To create half bricks, use a two-inch-wide brick chisel and a hammer. It's a fun process that yields clean and smooth cuts every time.

Here comes the fun part – adhesive selection! I initially used a regular construction adhesive, only to discover that it didn't provide the desired grip. I had to hold each brick in place for several minutes, which slowed down the progress. Luckily, I stumbled upon the Loctite Power Grab all-purpose construction adhesive, which made the job a breeze. It instantly secured the bricks in place, allowing me to finish the rest of the wall quickly.

Apply Mortar Between the Bricks

Now that the bricks are in place, it's time to apply mortar between them. Mix an inexpensive mortar mix with water in a large pail. Aim for a toothpaste-like consistency, as it will flow smoothly from the grout bag. Fill the spaces between the bricks, ensuring even coverage. Use a tuck pointing tool or your finger to smooth out the mortar. Don't worry about achieving a pristine finish – the goal is to create an authentically aged look.

Throughout the process, it's crucial to maintain the right consistency for the mortar mix. If it's too thick, the job becomes more challenging. Experiment until you find the perfect balance, and you'll be amazed at how well it works.

By working together efficiently, my husband and I completed the installation smoothly. We even added a section of wood to hang decorations from, giving our brick wall a functional twist. Now, all that's left to do is to let the mortar dry while enjoying a well-deserved glass of wine.
