Winter has arrived in East Tennessee, bringing with it snowfall and freezing temperatures. As the weather service predicts 4 to 8 inches of snow, conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day. In this article, we will provide you with live updates on the storm, road conditions, closures, and tips to keep yourself and your home safe.

Snowstorm Rolling Through East Tennessee

Residents in Knoxville and areas north should expect 5 to 8 inches of snow, while areas towards the Great Smoky Mountains may see about an inch less. The snow is expected to stop on January 16th, but the bitter cold and significant wind may bring temperatures below zero. It is advised to only travel when necessary and to be prepared with safety kits and warm clothing. Don't forget to check on elderly family members and neighbors, and ensure your pets are in a warm area.

TVA Ensures Power Grid Stability

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) assures residents that they have had no problems meeting power demands despite the bitter cold. However, they anticipate possible record demand on the morning of January 17th. To save power and reduce costs on your bill, the TVA recommends opening blinds in direct sunlight to allow warmth in and adjusting thermostats slightly lower than usual comfort levels. Avoid running major appliances during peak hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Please be aware that all lanes of Interstate 75 North are currently closed at Callahan Drive due to a crash. Locust Street, between Hill Avenue and Neyland Avenue, is also closed. Many government offices, libraries, and recreation centers in Knox County and Knoxville are also closed. Take note of the closures before heading out.
