Metropolis is a globally recognized design and architecture magazine that places a strong emphasis on ethics, innovation, and sustainability within the creative industry. Founded in 1981 by Horace Havemeyer III and Eugenie Cowan Havemeyer, the magazine is based in New York City and has become a leading voice in the design community.

Design at All Scales

Metropolis is driven by its motto "design at all scales," showcasing the impact of design in various aspects of our lives. The magazine, published ten times a year, offers both print and digital content to engage its audience in design-focused conversations. With over 50,000 subscribers, Metropolis has established itself as a platform for diverse perspectives and ideas in the design world.

A Legacy of Editorial Excellence

Metropolis has had a succession of notable editors-in-chief who have shaped its identity and contributed to its reputation. Susan S. Szenasy, who took over in 1985, played a crucial role in highlighting sustainability and inclusive design before they became mainstream concerns. Her writings emphasized the importance of ethics and sustainable practices in design education and professional practices.

In 2017, I assumed the role of editor-in-chief, following my successful tenure as senior editor from 2011 to 2016. Building upon the foundation laid by Szenasy, I continue to lead Metropolis with a focus on fostering innovation and sustainability. Our goal is to address the pressing challenges of our time through design thinking and provide a platform for meaningful conversations.

Inspiring a Futuristic and Sustainable World

Metropolis embraces futurist values, both aesthetically and ideologically. We celebrate the technological progress of the modern age and eagerly anticipate the dynamism and progression of design and architecture. The magazine's covers often reflect this dynamic through the use of neo-impressionism and cubism, capturing the essence of our evolving world.

We owe much of our inspiration to the work and writings of Susan S. Szenasy, whose ability to anticipate design trends has been remarkable. To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we republished articles that remain relevant today, focusing on work, sustainability, wellness, reuse, gender issues, accessibility, and digital technologies. These articles serve as a testament to the enduring relevance of our content.

Recognizing Design Excellence

Metropolis goes beyond being a magazine; we also host a range of annual competitions that encourage innovation and forward thinking in design. Our notable awards include the 'Next Generation Design Competition,' the 'Planet Positive Awards,' and the 'Future 100.'

The 'Next Generation Design Competition' invites experienced designers to create based on themes such as collaboration, wellness, effectiveness, productivity, office culture, and sustainability. Winners receive $10,000 in venture capital to support their projects.

The 'Planet Positive Awards' recognize sustainable projects and products that benefit both people and the planet. We highlight sustainable architecture, interior design, and products that have made a positive impact.

The 'Future 100' acknowledges the top 100 graduating students from interior and architecture design programs in the United States and Canada. It serves as a platform to connect emerging talent with leading design firms.

Celebrating Excellence in Design

Metropolis's impact and dedication to excellence have been recognized through various awards. We have been finalists in the National Magazine Awards in the 'Under 100,000 Circulation' category for General Excellence, honoring our effective writing, reporting, editing, and design.

In 2007, we were honored with the CIVITAS August Heckscher Award for our commitment to documenting urban life. Horace Havemeyer III, Susan S. Szenasy, and the entire Metropolis team were recognized for their enlightened and intelligent contributions.

We received the Institute Honor for Collaborative Achievement from the American Institute of Architects in 2009, acknowledging our dedication to promoting collaborative efforts within the field of design.

In 2017, Susan S. Szenasy was awarded the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum's Director's Award for her outstanding contributions to design journalism.
