How to Measure Pillows

If you're unsure about what size pillows to order, let me help you understand pillow measurements. The key thing to remember is that pillow dimensions always refer to the width and length of the pillow cover when lying flat and unstuffed. These measurements are taken along the seams from corner to corner and are typically rounded up to the nearest whole inch.

For instance, take a look at this elegant 20"x20" Sunbrella outdoor fabric pillow. But did you know that the actual measurements of the cover lying flat and unstuffed are 19.3"x19.3"? The dimensions of this pillow are rounded up, so it is classified as a 20"x20" pillow.

Now, let's consider the same pillow cover stuffed with a polyfill insert. If you were to measure it from corner to corner, you'd find the width and height to be closer to 18 inches. And if you were to measure straight across the center of the pillow, the width would be around 16.2 inches. Take a look at the image below for a visual representation.

These measurements serve as rough guidelines, but they give you a good idea of how pillow sizing works. However, keep in mind that the measurements might not be rounded up if the dimensions are only slightly larger than the nearest whole inch. For example, a pillow measuring 20.2"x20.2" may still be referred to as a 20"x20" pillow. Generally, the dimensions should be accurate within 0.7" of the given measurements.

When considering pillows for your sofas, chairs, or beds, it's crucial to keep this sizing explanation in mind. Many people make the mistake of measuring a stuffed pillow across the center and assuming that this dimension is the correct measurement of the pillow. If they order pillows based on this measurement, they're often surprised to find that the pillows they receive are smaller than expected.

The most common sizes for sofa pillows are 18"x18" and 20"x20". However, larger sofas and sectionals, especially those with deep seats or high backs, may benefit from 22"x22" or even 24"x24" pillows.

If you're measuring your pillows at home and your covers have zippers and removable inserts, be sure to take the inserts out before measuring. If your pillow is completely sewn up and you can't remove the insert, simply pinch the two top corners of the pillow and pull the top seam as tight as possible while holding it next to a tape measure. If you can't pull it completely straight, add a little length (usually 1/2 inch) to your measurement for an approximate size. You'll likely be pretty close.

And if your old pillow inserts seem flat and lumpy, consider getting new feather/down inserts or polyfill inserts to bring your pillows back to life.
