If you've recently snagged a fantastic deal on an OLED TV during the Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales, you might be wondering where to mount or place it. While wall-mounted TVs look sleek, leaving the space below unfurnished doesn't make much sense. And if you've also purchased a soundbar or speaker system, accommodating it becomes another challenge. But fear not, because BDI media consoles offer ingenious solutions that combine design, craftsmanship, and functionality.
BDI, a company based in Chantilly, Virginia, has been specializing in modern A/V furniture since 1984. Having reviewed several BDI media consoles over the years, I can confidently say that their build quality is top-notch, their designs are stunning, and they are built to last – qualities you'd expect at this price range. When it comes to A/V systems, BDI furniture surpasses offerings from West Elm, Room & Board, and Pottery Barn.
Among the various BDI media consoles I've reviewed, the BDI Corridor 8173 has quickly become my favorite. While the Corridor series has been around for eight years, the Corridor 8173 stands out with its low-profile design and new natural walnut finish. Unpacking it is a treat, as the beauty of the walnut finish becomes apparent.
Which Corridor Console to Choose?
The original Corridor 8179 is the taller version of the Corridor 8173 console. The only difference between the two is their height, with the 8179 standing 7.25-inches taller than the 8173 (28.25" vs 21"). The choice between the two may depend on your TV's size and whether you plan to mount it or place it on the console. Consider your couch seating height as well.
For instance, in my loft, I have a modern Crate & Barrel leather couch with a low seat height of 16 inches. By taking into account the TV's height and my eye-line while seated, I realized that the Corridor 8173, with its low profile, would provide me with 13 inches of space between the console and the TV. In comparison, the taller 8179 would only offer 6 inches of space. This extra room allows for more flexibility when it comes to soundbars or center channel speakers and creates a less cramped look. However, if you plan to place a flat panel TV directly on the console, the standard-sized 8179 model would be more suitable to align the TV at eye level. Both consoles can support TVs up to 85 inches. If you're considering placing an ultra-short throw projector on top of the console, it's worth opting for the lower profile 8173 for added flexibility.
Setup Made Easy
The BDI 8173 arrives almost fully assembled, like all BDI cabinets. While setting it up requires a little more effort than other BDI consoles, it's a straightforward process. First, you need to screw the rollable base into place when the unit is on its side. Then, attach the four black door handles to each door, ensuring they align evenly. Finally, install the glass top by placing rubber bumpers around the cabinet's edges and carefully positioning the black satin-etched glass with the help of another person. And just like that, your console is ready to use.
Features That Stand Out
BDI consoles are known for their thoughtful features, and the Corridor 8173 is no exception. Some of my favorites include rear access panels, adjustable shelves, cable management channels, adjustable feet levers, hidden wheels, a TV safety strap, a double-wide soundbar shelf, remote-friendly doors, and flow-through ventilation.
The Beauty of Subtle Details
Looking closely at the Corridor 8173, you'll notice several subtle details that enhance its design and functionality. One surprise feature is the soft-close doors. This small but significant addition means no more slamming doors or clicking to open magnetically push-to-open doors. The doors close effortlessly and silently with just a gentle nudge. Another fascinating detail is how the top glass shelf appears to float above the cabinet while extending the louvered design upward. This not only pleases the eye but also provides extra ventilation through the top of the cabinet. Additionally, the black door handles blend seamlessly with the wood panels, creating a sleek and cohesive look.
Reliable Customer Support
In the unfortunate event of any issues, BDI's customer support is prompt and helpful. When I received my BDI 8173 shipment, I noticed a small nick on one of the doors due to shipping damage. However, I contacted BDI, and they quickly shipped a replacement door that matched the stained natural walnut finish perfectly. Installing the replacement door was a breeze, and the final result looked as if the issue never occurred. BDI's dedication to customer satisfaction is commendable.
Functional and Maneuverable
The base of the Corridor 8173 is equipped with wheels, allowing for easy maneuvering during setup. The two middle doors open outward, creating ample space to conceal a wide soundbar within the cabinet. While this particular door style isn't acoustically transparent like some of BDI's other options, it still provides sufficient ventilation for components. The slots are wide enough to allow remote control signals to reach interior components, although the angle of the remote might affect its performance in certain situations.
A Conclusion that Leaves Nothing to Be Desired
When it comes to purchasing a media cabinet, it must tick all the boxes: appealing appearance, compatibility with your decor style, and a perfect fit for your space. The BDI Corridor 8173 surpasses expectations, leaving very little room for improvement. If you want to add the finishing touch to your home entertainment system, I highly recommend exploring BDI's entire lineup. Whether you choose the 8173 (4-door, low-profile), 8179 (4-door, standard height), or even the 8177 (3-door, standard height), you can't go wrong. The natural walnut finish is exquisite, although all three models are also available in charcoal stained ash and chocolate stained walnut.
Not only did the BDI Corridor 8173 exceed my expectations, but it also received the stamp of approval from everyone in my family. And trust me, that's no easy feat.
