Wallpaper Sources and Temporary Paper and How to Install

We understand that sometimes it's easier to buy something rather than DIY, but the cost of 4-foot floating shelves can be quite steep, starting from $60. With our DIY method, you can make them for just $20 each. Plus, the process is relatively simple if you have the right tools.

Installing Removable Wallpaper: Tips and FAQs

Before we dive into the DIY floating shelves, let's talk about installing removable wallpaper. It's essential to know how to do it correctly to achieve the best results. Here are some tips and FAQs:

Removable Wallpaper Tip #1

When hanging your first piece of wallpaper, make sure to leave some overhang rather than going flush with the wall or ceiling. This will account for any inconsistencies in the wall's straightness and save you from unnecessary frustration.

Removable Wallpaper Tip #2

Use a smoothing tool and work outward towards the seams instead of up and down. This technique ensures a seamless and professional finish.

Removable Wallpaper Tip #3 & 4

Cut the wallpaper as you go instead of pre-cutting all the pieces. Starting from the top, drop the roll down, attach the wallpaper to the wall, and then cut it, leaving extra at the bottom to avoid cutting into the wall.

Removable Wallpaper Tip #5

To cover a window with wallpaper, simply go over it and cut around the frame as you progress. It's a straightforward process that adds a stylish touch to your walls.

Removable Wallpaper Tip #6

When trimming off excess wallpaper, use a guard to protect it from accidental cuts. This step ensures a clean and professional appearance.

Removable Wallpaper Tip #7

If you encounter bubbles that can't be smoothed out with your tool, gently pop them and press the wallpaper down. The tiny pricks will be virtually invisible.

DIY Floating Shelf Tutorial

Now, let's move on to the exciting part - creating your own custom floating shelves. Here's what you'll need:

  • 1"x6"x10' Common Board or the desired size for your shelves
  • 1"x2"x8' Common Board or larger for taller shelves
  • 2"x2"x8' Strip Wood
  • Miter Saw (or have the boards cut at the store)
  • Nail Gun
  • Sand Paper
  • Plastic Wood (wood filler)
  • Paint or Stain

Step #1

Start by cutting the 10-foot long, 6-inch wide common board down to 4 feet using a Miter Saw. If you don't have a saw, you can have the boards cut at the store. You'll need two of these boards for the top and bottom of your shelves.

Step #2

Next, cut the 1"x2"x8' strip wood down to 4 feet to use as the center support for the top and bottom pieces.

Step #3

To stabilize the top and bottom common boards, use a second piece of the 1"x2" wood.

Step #4

Using a nail gun, nail one of the 1"x2" pieces to the 4-foot-long board.

Step #5

Cut another piece to fit on the ends between the top and bottom of the common board shelf.

Step #6 & 7

Fill in all the nail holes and the gaps between the boards with Plastic Wood. Use your finger or a rag to apply it smoothly.

Step #8

Allow the Plastic Wood to dry for about 30 minutes to an hour, then sand it down with a fine grit sandpaper.

Step #9

Paint or stain the shelves. We recommend using Pure White paint for a clean and elegant look.

Step #10

To hang the shelves, find a stud using a stud finder. Then, drill into the wall with a drill bit long enough to go through the wood strip and reach the wall, creating a pilot hole.

Step #11

Drill through your 2"x2"-8FT strip wood into the wall, creating a slot for the screw to go in. This strip should be cut down to 3 feet. Drive the screw into the strip to attach it firmly to the wall.

Step #12

Lastly, drive screws into the 2"x2" strip, close to the wall, in about three spots (adjust based on the length of your shelf). This ensures a secure and stable floating shelf.

Step #13

The final step is the most enjoyable one - decorating your shelves! Get creative with thrifted accessories in colors that complement your room's aesthetic.

That's it! With some wallpaper and a few basic supplies, you can transform a plain wall into a stunning focal point with custom-built floating shelves. Don't be afraid to let your creativity shine through as you decorate and arrange your shelves to suit your style.

Remember, DIY projects not only add a personal touch to your space but also save you money. So why not give it a try and create your own custom "built-in" look with floating shelves and wallpaper? You'll be amazed at the transformation they bring to your home!
