I'm thrilled to share this woodworking project with you. This DIY Washer Dryer Laundry Table transformed my laundry room into a functional and beautiful space. It's a farmhouse-style table that adds a touch of elegance to any laundry room.
Cost to Make this DIY Laundry Table
You might be wondering about the cost of this project. I spent around $85 for the lumber and leg hardware. The majority of the build was done using common whiteboard, which keeps the cost reasonable for a custom piece that adds both function and style to your laundry room.
2022 UPDATE: The price of lumber has gone UP, UP, UP in the last couple of years. You can save money by building this with a plywood top instead.
Building the Laundry Table
Now, let's get into the build process. First, let's take a look at the design notes for the washer dryer table top.
Washer Dryer Table Top Design Notes
Initially, I considered attaching the laundry table top to the wall. However, I realized that it wouldn't be safe and secure with just one wall for support. So, I opted for a table that could be easily removed when needed.
It's important to note that laundry tables should be built to fit your machines and available space. The build details I provide will help you figure out the measurements specific to your washer and dryer.
Building a Supporting Frame
To create a sturdy frame, I recommend using 2x2 lumber for the legs and connecting them with 1x2 dimensional lumber. This provides additional stability and support. Be sure to measure the height and width of your machines to determine the appropriate dimensions for the legs and the opening between them. Leave a small gap to ensure that the DIY laundry table doesn't touch the machines.
Building the Laundry Table Top
When constructing the table top, make it 1" longer and deeper than the frame. This will create a 1/2" overhang on all sides, adding a polished look to your table.
For the original table top design, I used 5 boards of various widths of dimensional lumber to create a 28" x 60" top. If you prefer using dimensional lumber, such as select pine or whiteboard, you can join the boards together using wood glue and pocket holes.
However, with the current rise in lumber prices, a cheaper and easier option is to use 3/4" plywood for the table top. Simply make the edges of the plywood look attractive by adding edge-banding.
Optional: Add a Catch-All Board Along the Table Top Back
To finish off the DIY laundry table top, I attached a 1" x 2" board along the back using glue and a brad nailer. This board prevents items from falling behind the machines and also conceals the washing machine outlets and plumbing.
Attaching the Washer Dryer Table Top to the Frame
There are two methods you can use to attach the top to the frame. You can either use Kreg Jig pocket holes or little angle brackets. For added stability, I recommend using six brackets in total – three on each long side. This ensures the top is securely in place and resistant to warping.
How I Painted My DIY Laundry Table
For a cohesive look, I painted the top in Behr's Polished Pearl to match the rest of the trim and molding in my house. As for the legs, cross supports, and table edges, I opted for Sherwin William's Hale Navy. Lastly, to protect the table and give it a smooth finish, I applied a couple coats of Rust-oleum's Matte Ultimate Polyurethane.
I absolutely love this laundry table! It not only hides the gap and outlets but also provides a convenient place to drop things when we walk in the door. It's a functional and stylish addition to any laundry room.
