In 1803, the United States acquired most of the land as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The Kansas Territory was organized in 1854, and Kansas became the 34th state in 1861. Montgomery County was officially established on February 26, 1867, and was named after Richard Montgomery, a distinguished general in the American Revolutionary War.
