Kan, a high-end Japanese restaurant designed by odd, is a place where the concept of gift boxes takes center stage. This innovative design showcases the traditional Japanese Juubako, a wooden box with multiple layers, and gives it a modern twist. It's like receiving a present from a faraway land.
A Tale of Craftsmanship and Tradition

The six gift boxes that adorn the restaurant's interior are inspired by the traditional art of Maki-e, a painting technique originating from the Tang Dynasty. In Maki-e, metal powder is mixed with lacquer and delicately applied to wood. To preserve the essence of this art form, the designers opted for a glass clip painting technique, resulting in a stunning portrayal of traditional art.
These six gift boxes are strategically placed in a T-shaped space, comprising private rooms and a semi-open Itamae area. Each box floats or touches the ground, creating a sense of separation and unity simultaneously. The design plays with perception, providing a visually engaging and immersive dining experience.
Embracing Nature and Creativity

As guests move through the restaurant, they encounter a karesansui landscape, a traditional Japanese rock garden. This natural element complements the flow of customers and adds a sense of tranquility to the space. A strategically placed viewing window breaks down the barriers between the interior and exterior, allowing patrons to enjoy a unique perspective while dining.

The heart of Japanese cuisine lies in the skillful hands of the Itamae, the chef. To facilitate the seamless delivery of fresh ingredients, the kitchen and preparation area are intelligently connected to the Itamae section. This open space allows guests to witness the mastery behind their meals. Wooden lines and black wood grids create an ambiance reminiscent of distant clouds and nearby mountains, while a marble-covered niche adds a captivating contrast to the overall light tones.
