Glenn Murcutt, an award-winning architect, has designed a truly remarkable structure known as the Magney House. Also referred to as the Bingie Farm, this house was built to take advantage of the breathtaking views and capture the sunlight, creating the perfect retreat for Murcutt's adventurous clients.
The Magney House was constructed between 1982 and 1984 in Bingie Point, Moruya, on the picturesque South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. It boasts unparalleled views of the Australian coastline that are sure to leave a lasting impression.

The design of the Magney House is truly unique, with two mirror-image sides connected by a communal courtyard featuring a convenient gas BBQ for outdoor cooking.
The Eastern Side
While the two sides of the Magney House may appear identical from the outside, their differences become apparent once you step inside. The Eastern side includes a master bedroom, bathroom, private study, and the main kitchen. It features a gas fireplace, a gas cooktop, a fridge, a microwave, and an oven.
The Western Side
On the Western side of the house, you'll find the remaining sleeping areas. This includes three additional bedrooms, a bathroom, a second kitchen, and a second living area.
A House Designed for Climate and Site
The Magney House was specifically crafted to suit the surrounding site and climate of the region. Its unique shape allows for optimal solar angles and can be adjusted to suit different weather conditions. The design also provides a windbreak from the southern winds.
The iconic roofline not only adds to the house's aesthetic appeal but also serves a practical purpose. It features a water catchment system integrated into the roof, making the house sustainable. Despite these functional elements, the design maintains its visual appeal.
Giving the Clients What They Wanted
The clients who commissioned the Magney House already owned the land and had been using it for camping throughout the year. They desired a lightweight structure that blended seamlessly into the natural surroundings. The clients also requested a simple floor plan with two separate areas. Inspired by shipping containers, the design incorporates a long and narrow layout.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Magney House is not actually part of the house itself but the stunning environment it is situated in. The ocean views are simply breathtaking, creating an ever-changing panorama that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
The Location and Space
Spread across 33 hectares (81.5 acres), the Magney House borders the Eurobodalla National Park. This challenging landscape with its coastal winds influences the daily temperatures, with summers averaging around 68 degrees Fahrenheit and winters ranging from the low 40s to the high 50s.
Perhaps due to the rugged nature of the landscape or the remote location, the surroundings of the house remain unspoiled. This pristine setting allows the house to maximize the northern light while offering breathtaking views of the distant mountains, nearby beaches, and a tranquil lake.
If this sounds like the dream vacation spot, you're in luck! The Magney House is available for rent, offering guests the opportunity to experience its unique beauty. With 2,600 square feet, four bedrooms, and seven beds, including two queens and two bunk beds, it's no surprise that this vacation rental is highly sought after in Bingie, NSW, Australia.
Now, take a moment to imagine yourself in this remarkable architectural marvel, gazing out at the awe-inspiring views, and basking in the natural beauty that surrounds the Magney House.
