Most of us spend several hours per day atop our sofas. Don't waste your precious time on a rigid, bargain-basement model or lumpy hand-me-down that hurts just to look at. Enjoy your well-deserved rest and relaxation by choosing one of today's most comfortable couches instead.
A comfy sofa — one with super-soft upholstery, firm but cozy seat cushions, and generous seat depth — is much more attainable than you may realize. I spent months seeking out the most comfortable options, researching and testing over three dozen high-quality couches. This guide highlights my findings, showcasing the coziest picks for every living space and lifestyle.
How We Chose Our Favorite Comfortable Couches
For this guide on comfortable couches, the Home of Cozy team researched and reviewed dozens of sofas, including a variety of recliners, loveseats, sectionals, sleeper sofas, and modular sofas, each in various sizes and with different types of performance fabrics. Here's a look at the criteria used to identify the most comfortable options:
- Density - The most comfortable sofas are soft enough to provide a gentle embrace yet dense enough to prevent your sinking into the filling.
- Texture - Not every comfortable sofa includes upholstery that's smooth to the touch, but most provide a relatively soft finish with minimal ribbing or coarseness.
- Size - Comfy sofas are spacious sofas, with enough room to move around and snuggle up in various positions (even with multiple users seated at once).
- Craftsmanship - The mark of any quality sofa. Each joint and each seam must be pieced together by the hands of skilled artisans, with particular attention to detail placed on the parts of adjustable sleeper and reclining sofas.
- Customer service - Most — though not all — comfy couches come shipped to your door unassembled. For this reason, it's imperative to have joyful and reliable customer support agents ready to assist and streamline the process.
After carefully inspecting the sofas on each of these points, we set aside the top performers across all categories, compiling the list you see below.
Our Top Picks For The Most Comfortable Sofas Of 2024
1. Most Comfortable Sofa Overall: Allform 3-Seater With Chaise
- Price: $2,245+
- Dimensions: W90" x H34" x D61"
- Frame material: Solid maple and poplar kiln-dried wood
- Upholstery options: Polyester and leather
Home of Cozy Exclusive Offer: 20% off sitewide with promo code COZY20OFF
What I Love About This Allform Sofa
When the Allform 3-Seater first arrived at Home of Cozy's office, I wasn't expecting much in the way of comfort. I thought it was primarily just a looks sofa. You know, a sleek and modern centerpiece that's more for show than for actual sitting. But boy, was I wrong.
The Allform's cushions are as cozy as they come, stuffed with layers of thick, supportive foam wrapped in ultra-soft polyester or leather upholstery — customizable to your precise specifications. Meanwhile, the sofa's generously-sized chaise section adds depth to your comfort, providing enough room to stretch out and unwind after a long day at work or a night on the town.
Although the Allform markets itself as a 3-seater, its 90" wood frame is in the medium-to-large size. I've had no trouble stuffing several friends on this sofa, and its sturdy construction easily bears the load. It's one of the best couches I've come across — a cozy piece of furniture at an unbeatable price.

What I Didn't Love
It takes a little while to break things in. The Allform's cushions are a little stiff at first, and it's a week or two until they've adequately softened and begin providing that plush comfort I love so much.
I'll also mention that I don't love putting things together myself, and Allform does come unassembled. Sure, the sofa's easy-latch system comes together in under an hour. But I wish the company offered a white glove delivery option.
2. Most Comfortable Sectional Sofa: Bondi 3-Seater Sectional by Inside Weather
- Price: $2,750+
- Dimensions: W118.25" x D41" x H33"
- Frame materials: Ash hardwood
- Upholstery options: Dozens
What I Love About This Inside Weather Sofa
Sitting in the Bondi feels like sinking into a marshmallow. It cradles your body with delectable softness while providing just enough buoyancy to keep you upright (though you may be tempted by a nap).
I also love how much room the Bondi offers. I can stretch out entirely (I'm 5'9) and only take up half the 3-seater sofa. It's like the adult version of a childhood fort, wonderfully spacious and full of sections to explore. Like a child's fort, the Bondi also shrinks and expands depending on the situation. You can start with one or two units and add additional seating when you move to a bigger home or as finances allow.
Although I prefer the quick-ship variant (I'm notoriously impatient), you can also have the Bondi custom-made to order. Inside Weather offers dozens of upholstery and color options, including my favorite vintage velvet, and several frame stains to ensure the perfect match for your space.
What I Didn't Love
Even though I have a large living room, the Bondi 3-Seater sofa still feels a little cramped in the space — it's that big. It's also fairly low to the ground. Although the entire sofa measures 33" high, the bottom cushion extends just 17" above the floor. It's still comfortable, but it doesn't offer as much support as you'll find in some of Inside Weather's other options.
3. Most Comfortable Sofa Bed: Shelter Queen By West Elm
- Price: $2,499+
- Dimensions: W84.5 x D38 x H30
- Frame materials: Solid oak and engineered hardwood
- Upholstery options: Dozens
What I Love About This West Elm Sofa
There's never enough room for my overnight guests. West Elm solves this problem, providing a slim sofa that fits beautifully in my room by day and unfolds into a full-size queen bed by night.
In sofa form, the Shelter Queen features an elegant design, with four back and side pillows adorning a singular bottom cushion. These cushions come stuffed to perfection, offering a few inches of supple polyurethane foam for ideal support. When it's time for sleep, these pillows slip off, and the bed unsheathes from its frame in under 30 seconds. The sleep experience is equally easy and delightful. West Elm's gel-infused memory foam mattress feels like butter, with a softness that melts away stress and ensures your guests leave without aches or pains.
My favorite part of all is the white glove delivery. After selecting your fabric and placing your order, West Elm begins working to handcraft your sofa. When it's ready, they bring it to your home and set it all up for you, easy as can be.
What I Didn't Love
I've spent many years testing and reviewing West Elm furniture. Although I'm always impressed by the quality and craftsmanship, there is one big problem — the lack of warranty. West Elm offers no guarantee on its Shelter Queen, only a trifling 30-day trial. I'd encourage you to test this sofa out at a retail location before customizing and placing your order online. That way, you can be sure it's the best sleeper sofa for you before spending such a large sum.
4. Most Comfortable Leather Couch: The Arch Nomad Leather Sofa by Burrow
- Price: $2,495+
- Dimensions: W86" x H33" x D35"
- Frame material: Baltic Birch
- Upholstery options: Top-grain Italian leather
What I Love About This Burrow Sofa
I love mid-century modern sofas, both for their minimalist silhouettes and excellent comfort. I also love a blend of sleek and rustic, finding that the conversion point creates a dapper yet warm statement piece in nearly any room. The Nomad provides all that and more, juxtaposing an elegant mid-century modern frame against traditional leather that's as cozy as can be.
Although Burrow offers the Nomad Sofa in three variants, it's the Arch Nomad that I find most comfortable. This model features dense cushions and soft downward-sloping armrests that support you at every angle.
Aside from its aesthetic and physical comforts, Burrow also provides a few "creature comforts" that I can't live without. This includes a handy built-in power cord with a 72" reach, letting me charge my phone halfway across the room. The modular sectional design is also entirely configurable, and it ships straight to your door in a handful of easy-to-maneuver, no-hassle boxes.
What I Didn't Love
The Nomad is fairly small for a three-seater, sitting at 86" wide. I've had no trouble piling three people on, but it does push the limits of intimacy.
The assembly is also a little tricky. Although the Slope Nomad features a relatively simple latching system, a few of the steps (I'm looking at you, Step 4) take a little extra finagling. Bring a friend, and it shouldn't be a problem.
5. Most Comfortable Futon: Croydon Klick Klak Sofa by Raymour & Flanigan
Photo courtesy of Raymour & Flanigan
- Price: $665.95+
- Dimensions: W74.5" x D37" x H36"
- Frame materials: Pinewood
- Upholstery options: Polyester
What I Love About This Raymour & Flanigan Sofa
Back in college, I spent a great deal of time sleeping on futons. Let's just say, I don't have fond memories of those restless nights. That's why I was so hesitant to try the Croydon Klick Klak Sofa by Raymour & Flanigan. But after spending some time with it, I can confidently say that this isn't your typical dorm room futon, even if the ultra-affordable price tag might have you believing otherwise.
The Croyden Klick Klak is shockingly comfortable. It only boasts about six inches of cushioning, but the thick polyfill keeps you upright and supported across the seat and backrest. The adjustable mechanism even lets you lock in a comfy upright angle, ensuring perfect posture no matter the occasion.
My favorite part, however, is the sleeping experience. To switch from sitting to sleeping, you just pull and then push on the backrest, easy as can be. In terms of sleep quality, it's as close to perfect as you can get on a folding futon. The cushions compress to provide a near-seamless mattress that provides adequate cushioning in all the right places. It's a fantastic option for overnight guests.
What I Didn't Love
Although it's among the most comfortable futons on the market, the Klick Klak is, after all, still a futon. It only boasts a 19" seat depth, so it doesn't provide full leg coverage in a seated position. I also dislike the lack of armrests, as it limits the amount of upper body comfort and support.
6. Most Comfortable Velvet Sofa: Sven Sofa by Article
- Price: $2,299+
- Dimensions: W100" x D67" x H34"
- Frame materials: Birchwood
- Upholstery options: Polyester, cotton, and leather
What I Love About This Article Sofa
There's something intoxicating the Sven by Article. It might be the way it looks, with its mid-century modern frame and tufted accents. Or, it could be the velvet fabric, which is supremely soft to the touch, delivering a delightfully cozy lounging experience ideal for snuggling up with a nice book and cup of tea. Either way, the Sven makes a brilliant statement piece that looks and feels great in just about any room.
The Sven features polyester-filled cushions, which, in turn, sit atop Pirelli webbing for a superbly buoyant level of spring and give. Meanwhile, the left- or right-side chaise provides extra room to lounge and move around while adding dimension to the delightful aesthetic.
Although green isn't my favorite look, I love the Sven's mossy velvet upholstery, which livens up the space with a unique pop of color. If you don't want to try the green velvet upholstery, Article offers the Sven in three other playful colors, as well as more traditional polyester and leather fabrics.
What I Didn't Love
Although I love the soft touch of the luxe velvet fabric, I dislike how it loses some of its luster and vibrancy over time. I also dislike how easily it stains when exposed to small amounts of liquid.
The other issue I've had with the Sven is pillow compression. The originally-fluffy cushions begin to sink within a couple of months of use. If you opt for the Sven, I recommend keeping it out of direct sunlight and developing a habit of regular fluffing.
7. Most Comfortable Budget Sofa: Kivik Sofa by IKEA
- Price: $899
- Dimensions: W89.75” x 37.5” x 32.5”
- Frame materials: Solid wood and fiberboard
- Upholstery options: Polyester
What I Love About This IKEA Sofa
I'm a frugal person. This doesn't work so well when searching for comfortable sofas, as they tend to rest on the higher end of the pricing spectrum. The Kivik Sofa, however, is different. It's among the most supportive sofas I've tried at a price that lives well within my comfort zone.
The Kivik is a two-seater, but it's as big as many of the three-seaters on this list. I love how freeing this feels, as it allows me to spread out and curl up without disturbing those sitting on the other cushion. Meanwhile, the sofa's Tibbleby polyester fabric is mostly soft to the touch, with slight texture on the seat and backrest for aesthetic purposes. Speaking of which, I enjoy the chunky vibe of the Kivik, particularly the generously-sized and low-profile armrests. They're so big, I even have enough room to place my afternoon tea tray!
IKEA may have a reputation for budget furniture, but its 10-year warranty is unheard of in this price range. I love the Kivik and recommend it to any family on a budget.
What I Didn't Love
You already know the drill — IKEA furniture is a pain to piece together. It comes with a set of paper instructions and takes over an hour to set up. You can avoid the painstaking process and hire a TaskRabbit, but that eats into the money you're saving with the low-cost couch. It's ultimately a tradeoff, but I generally think it's worth it.
8. Most Comfortable Couch For Small Spaces: Stone & Beam Down-Filled Sofa by Amazon
- Price: $829+
- Dimensions: W74” x D45" x H37"
- Frame materials: Solid hardwood
- Upholstery options: Polyester and leather
What I Love About This Amazon Sofa
As a long-time Amazon Prime subscriber, I was ecstatic to discover the brand's new Stone & Beam furniture lineup. High-quality, affordable home furniture delivered in two days? Sign me up! Let me just say, Amazon didn't disappoint.
The Stone & Beam costs under $1,000 and comes delivered in two days, free of charge. Even more impressive, there's no clunky setup or assembly process — it's ready to go from the moment it reaches your door. Once it's in position, take a seat and prepare to be blown away. The Stone & Beam is one of the most comfortable sofas on the market, stuffed full of down filling and wrapped in cozy polyester or leather upholstery.
It doesn't lack in looks, either. The Stone & Beam boasts a chunky square arm sofa design that's playful and feels extremely homey in the living room. I recommend the matching ottoman, which will set you back a few extra hundred dollars but pairs well with the deep seat for unbridled comfort.
What I Didn't Love
Although I was surprised by how much comfort the Stone & Beam offers, there are a few negatives worth mentioning.
First, while the down filling is ultra-soft, it comes with a major drawback. That is, it's prone to sagging. The cushions start to compress with extended use, warping the internal filling and crinkling the upholstery. While regular fluffing helps counteract the problem, it's still annoying.
I also wasn't incredibly impressed by the quality of the craftsmanship. It's not bad for the price. But I noticed a lack of attention to detail (especially in the stitching) that I rarely encounter in sofas made in the USA.
9. Most Comfortable Sofa With Deep Seats: Oceanside 90" Wide-Arm Deep Seat Sofa by Crate & Barrel
Photo courtesy of Crate & Barrel
- Price: $1,799
- Dimensions: W90" x D43" x H30"
- Frame materials: Engineered hardwood
- Upholstery options: Polyester-cotton
What I Love About This Crate & Barrel Sofa
The Create & Barrel Oceanside is a breath of fresh air. It boasts a light and airy color palette, with featherlight polyfeather filling that feels like floating on a cloud. The quality of its materials and craftsmanship look and feel second to none, and I've found that it holds up extraordinarily well over time. I expect it to last well over a decade.
Another thing I love about the Oceanside is its size. It features a generous 90" by 43" square arm sofa design that easily sits three, even four, people. With such a big frame, I was concerned with its sustainability — such a big sofa uses a lot of lumber. And while Crate & Barrel advertises using FSC®-certified wood, that seemed more like marketing lingo than anything else. After a little digging, however, I uncovered that Crate & Barrel's engineered hardwood supply chain meets (and even exceeds) the government's standards for land stewardship. I'm proud to recommend the Oceanside to anyone.
What I Didn't Love
Sitting in the Oceanside can feel like getting lost at sea. That's because it's deep. Like, really deep. Although this adds to the comfort, it's not ideal for sitting upright. For that reason, I don't recommend the Stone & Beam in traditional living spaces. It's more of a cozy cuddling couch than a formal living room model.
Another consideration is that the Oceanside boasts a fairly boxish design. To soften things up, you'll need to add a fair amount of throw pillows.
10. Most Comfortable Mid-Century Modern Sofa: Owen Sofa by Castlery
- Price: $1,439+
- Dimensions: W84.5" x D39" x H31"
- Frame materials: Solid wood and plywood
- Upholstery options: Polyester blend
What I Love About This Castlery Sofa
You can never have too many cushions (that's my motto, anyway). That's why I love the Owen Sofa from Castlery. It's a two-seater love sofa with eight cushions surrounding the back, bottom, and sides. They all combine to provide an exceptional amount of comfort, keeping you snug in nearly every position. Of course, all these pillows could easily pose an issue if poorly implemented. But that's not the case with the Owen. Its cushions are the perfect firmness, soft yet moderately dense. What's more, they provide excellent postural support and retain perfect shape over time.
Concerning aesthetics, the Owen comes with several different fabric options, all of which feature a polyester blend that's perfectly soft to the touch (the polyester linen blend does offer a touch of texture). Meanwhile, the minimal hardwood frame supports several full-grown adults without taking up much visual space, ensuring its emphasis remains on the plush, supple pillows. It's a modern sofa that matches and elevates your home decor for major style and maximum comfort.
What I Didn't Love
Upon inspection, I noticed the Owen Sofa's tag features a Prop 65 warning. I did a little digging and discovered that it features formaldehyde, a cancer-causing agent frequently found in particleboard. Although the small amount is likely nothing to worry about, it is an indicator of lower-quality construction.
Comfortable Couch FAQs
In this section, I'll answer some of the web's most frequently asked questions about today's comfiest couches.
1. What type of sofas are the most comfortable?
The most comfortable sofas are those with ample filling, spacious seating sections, and smooth, high-quality upholstery. Modular loveseats and sectionals tend to fit these criteria the best, but any sofa that matches those specifications should provide exceptional comfort.
2. How can you tell if a sofa will be comfortable?
The thickness and density of a sofa's cushions are the best indicators of overall comfort. Although you can visually check for thickness (look for 6" or more), density is something you must feel for yourself or ascertain from a trusted resource. Concerning fabric, performance polyester and genuine leather provide relatively soft, cozy finishes that feel good to touch and wear well over time. To determine which type of fabric a sofa has, check its tag or product tearsheet.
3. What is the most comfortable seat depth for a sofa?
A seat depth of 22" to 23" is the most comfortable for most adults. However, exact specifications will vary based on your height and preferred sitting style. If measuring the entire sofa (not just the cushions), a depth around 36" offers a reasonably comfortable starting point.
