The nonprofit organization, Community Action for Better Housing (CABH), has taken ownership of the property and proposed a project that combines historic restoration with the stabilization of existing affordable housing. The goal is to repair and renovate the entire structure, bringing back the rental units and first-floor commercial space for public use. CABH is seeking $255,000 in funding from the Community Preservation Act to support the $3.3 million project. With the expected completion date set for June 2025, this initiative aims to provide a beautiful and safe home for the residents in need.
A Return to Apartment Living
Before the fire, the Talbot Apartments housed 19 residents who received vouchers from the city of New Bedford. Discussions are currently underway to ensure that these residents will once again receive vouchers from the New Bedford Housing Authority, allowing them to apply for housing and be placed in the newly restored apartments. Additionally, the retail space on the first floor, totaling 1,500 square feet, will be available for use. While it is uncertain if the former tenant will return, the opportunity is open for someone new to take advantage of the commercial space. The interior will undergo a complete rehabilitation, including the installation of a new sprinkler system and fire alarm system, ensuring the safety and comfort of the residents. The restoration efforts will not only modernize the interior but also preserve its historical features, making it a unique and charming place to call home.

Community Action for Better Housing (CABH) is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the city of New Bedford. Its mission is to buy and rehabilitate properties for low-income and very low-income residents in New Bedford and Fall River. To date, CABH has provided affordable housing to 84 individuals and families, as well as housing units to Catholic Social Services of Fall River for its homeless shelter program. Additionally, three single-family homes have been acquired to be renovated and sold to income-eligible first-time homebuyers.
